Inter Miami sign experienced defender A.J. DeLaGarza

If it’s experience on the backline Inter Miami was looking for, they certainly found it.

On Monday, the team announced signing three-time Major League Soccer Cup winner A.J. DeLaGarza as a free agent.

DeLaGarza won the MLS Cup with the LA Galaxy in 2011, 2012 and 2014. The Galaxy won the Supporters’ Shield in 2010 and 2011 with DeLaGarza in defense.

“His versatility and experience are vital for the Club," said Inter Miami CF’s Sporting Director Paul McDonough, on the team’s website. “Pair that with his leadership ability, and he will be able to come into preseason ready to contribute.”

After making 204 appearances for the Galaxy, DeLaGarza most recently featured for the Houston Dynamo. He helped lead the Dynamo to the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and made 57 appearances for Houston.

Internationally, DeLaGarza started in 2012 playing for the U.S. Men’s National Team — playing in friendlies against Panama and Venezuela.

He switched to play for the Guam national team in 2013 and, in 2018, he helped lead them to their first two ever FIFA World Cup qualification wins.

DeLaGarza played collegiate soccer at the University of Maryland, helping the Terrapins to a pair of national titles.

Inter Miami will open the home portion of the 2020 campaign against DeLaGarza’s former team, the LA Galaxy at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 14.
